Emerging ExG-based NUI Inputs in Extended Realities: A Bottom-up Survey

Incremental and quantitative improvements of two-way interactions with e x tended realities (XR) are contributing toward a qualitative leap into state XR ecosystems being efficient, user-friendly, widely adopted. However, there multiple barriers on the way omnipresence XR; among them following: computational power limitations portable hardware, social acceptance novel interaction protocols, usability efficiency interfaces. In this article, we overview analyse natural user interfaces based sensing electrical bio-signals that can be leveraged to tackle challenges input interactions. Electroencephalography-based brain-machine enable thought-only hands-free interaction, myoelectric methods track body gestures employing electromyography, gaze-tracking electrooculography examples bio-signal technologies united under collective concept ExG. ExG signal acquisition modalities provide interact computing systems using intuitive actions enriching XR. This survey will bottom-up starting from (i) underlying biological aspects techniques, (ii) hardware solutions, (iii) ExG-enabled applications, (iv) discussion such applications technologies, as well (v) research challenges, application directions, open problems; evidencing benefits ExG-based Natural User Interfaces inputs introduce area
